Kvass for the Russian people was always “soft-drink number one” due to the ease of production and cheap price. Although originally it was not “soft-drink” at all and for almost 10 centuries it was quite alcoholic. But in the 20th century Russia and later in the Soviet Union the kvass producers only made the non-alcoholic version which was distributed in big yellow cisterns on wheels, which were standing on the streets of many Soviet cities. These cisterns you can still see from time to time on the streets of Russian towns, but most Russian kvass nowadays is being consumed from the plastic bottles or cans. There are many kvass producers now in Russia, but nobody has achieved yet the unique and legendary taste of Soviet kvass, which has nostalgic value for many. But nostalgia aside, the Soviet kvass was genuinely very good, and the only manufacturer which now came close to this legendary Soviet taste, in our opinion, is “Ochakovo” with its “Ochakovskiy” kvass. By the words of its manufacturer, “it is prepared according to an old Russian recipe on a mixed yeast from pure cultures of yeast and lactic acid bacteria. Thanks to its natural ingredients, health-giving substances and a unique set of amino acids, the drink refreshes perfectly, gives strength and energy, quenches thirst. It has a rich dark color, a balanced sweet and sour taste and a pleasant aroma of rye crust”. All is true, and that is why we only have “Ochakovskiy” in our KVASS section, although there are at least 4 more big manufacturers of kvass in Russia and many more small ones. Still, we stand by our decision to include only “Ochakovskiy” kvass, because we want you to buy genuine Russian kvass only and experience the close to perfection taste and not the lackluster product many other manufacturers produce. We are sure that where you live you won’t be able to buy the kvass of similar quality, so buy “Ochakovskiy” kvass from us and very soon you will experience the true taste of Russian kvass.
