The history of the pryanik is inextricably linked with the history of bread. Two thousand years ago, the equivalent of a pryanik was a flat cake of flour and honey. In Ancient Russia, when spices from the East were not yet imported, people were baking Honey Bread in which honey was 50% of the product.
The word "pryanik" comes from the Old Russian "peper" - pepper, that is spicy, and a whole bunch of spices are included in the pryanik: cloves, cinnamon, pepper, cardamom, nutmeg, ginger, baden, anise.
Pryanik was always associated with the holiday, it was baked and presented as a gift for the wedding or Christmas. Today, it is a common product which everybody can enjoy, and this particular pryanik has the ginger taste.
